Case Studies

A flavour of the type of technology and engineering work rma have handled is detailed as follows:

Examining the Contracts click here to read more
Following theft of copper pipe work and electrical cabling from a new office development, the insured submitted a claim for the reinstatement of the works, to the sum of £25,000. We were advised that the contract was written in joint names but this was only between the Client and the insured who were the main contractor. The subcontractor responsible for the mechanical and electrical services was employed under a separate contract and as the sub contract works had not been handed over, we argued successfully that the insured were not responsible for the loss.

Articulated dump trucks catch fire click here to read more
Each truck was written off at a unit cost of £250,000. Our investigations revealed that the trucks had sequential engine numbers. Furthermore, the engines were derivatives of the engines fitted to the London 'bendy' buses which had caught fire at a similar time.

We established that there was a problem with the turbocharger intercooler and the engine manufacturer ultimately accepted responsibility and liability, resulting in nil settlements for each incident.
Off the back of a lorry. click here to read more
A pallet of computer equipment comprising £20,000 worth of file servers and expensive network printers, literally fell off the back of lorry. The file servers were backed up however there were re-configuration issues. rma were able to liaise with the insured and their computer consultants, such that the disruption was minimised to half a day, by using the existing disk drives, installed in a temporary server.

Breach of intellectual copyright. click here to read more
We have dealt with a claim for breach of intellectual copyright, with one company copying another's website. The company doing the copying tripped up when they didn't amend the email addresses for the response forms on the web site. All their potential clients' requests for information were directed to the original company's address. And the two companies involved were Solicitors! We handled the potential public liability claim, which was submitted, but this was declined on the basis that there was no material damage.

Joining the jet set reduces gross loss. click here to read more
Without delay, rma authorised a multi national computer company to charter a jet to fly to Grenoble in France to collect a number of server power supplies, the originals having been damaged by a series of power surges. Swift decision making mitigated the consequential loss aspect to an increased cost of £25,000, compared with a potential loss of gross profit of £250,000 for every 24 hours that the systems were down.
